The Clothes I Keep Searching For

One of the reasons I started sewing wasn’t because I wanted a new hobby.

It was because I kept looking for clothes that seemed simple enough to exist, yet somehow were impossible to find.

As someone who prefers modest clothing made from natural fabrics, I often find myself compromising. The fabric is right but the fit isn’t. The fit is right but the sleeves are too short. The design is beautiful but it’s made entirely from polyester.

So instead of continuing the endless search, I’ve started keeping a list of outfits I’d love to create myself someday.

1. The Everyday Cotton Dress

This is the dress I would reach for on an ordinary Tuesday.

Loose-fitting, breathable, full sleeves, and made from soft cotton that feels comfortable even in Singapore’s weather.

No complicated details. No trend-driven cuts. Just something effortless that looks put together while still being comfortable enough for everyday life.

The hardest part is finding one that’s modest, comfortable, and made from natural fabric all at the same time.

2. The Silk Co-ord Set

Not every day calls for a dress.

Sometimes I want a simple long tunic paired with wide-leg pants in a soft silk or silk-blend fabric.

Something elegant enough for dinner, Eid gatherings, or a special outing, but comfortable enough that I don’t feel overdressed.

Most of the options I see are either too fitted, too flashy, or not quite my style.

In my mind, the perfect version has clean lines, minimal embellishment, and lets the fabric do most of the talking.

3. The Perfect Salwar Kameez for Dawats

Every South Asian woman probably understands this struggle.

When there’s a wedding event, family gathering, or dawat coming up, finding an outfit that feels elegant without being over-the-top can be surprisingly difficult.

I dream of a wardrobe filled with beautiful salwar kameez sets made from high-quality fabrics, thoughtful embroidery, and silhouettes that are timeless rather than trendy.

The kind of outfit you can wear today and still love five years from now.

4. The Conference Outfit

As a software engineer, I occasionally attend conferences, networking events, meetings, and professional gatherings.

I want something that feels professional and polished without looking like traditional corporate wear.

My ideal outfit would probably be a structured long tunic with tailored wide-leg trousers, made from a fabric that drapes beautifully and stays comfortable throughout a long day.

Professional enough for work.
Comfortable enough for real life.
Modest enough to feel like myself.

That combination is surprisingly difficult to find.

5. The South Asian Wedding Outfit

This is probably the category I daydream about the most.

A beautifully draped saree.
An elegant gharara.
A classic sharara.
A heavily embroidered salwar kameez.

Not because I need them often, but because South Asian formal wear is an art form in itself.

The fabrics, colours, embroidery, and craftsmanship tell stories that have been passed down through generations.

If I ever become confident enough in my sewing skills, creating one of these pieces would feel like a major milestone.

Final Thoughts

Looking at this list, I realize that none of these outfits are particularly trendy.

What connects them is something much simpler: comfort, modesty, quality fabrics, and timeless design.

Perhaps that’s why I’ve become interested in sewing.

Not because I want an endless wardrobe, but because I want clothes that feel like me.

And sometimes the easiest way to find exactly what you’re looking for is to learn how to make it yourself.
